More on fake blogging
Check out this link at Wikipedia on fake blogs, or "flogs."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fake_blog
This is an entry that's incomplete, and I thought it would be an interesting class project for us to add to the entry and make it better, based on class discussion yesterday. So, keep this in mind.

A link about social networking
Megan sent this URL for a story at prsa.org about social networking, and how the same approach worked for Target, while backfiring for Wal-Mart.
http://www.adweek.com/aw/magazine/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003654896
Again, it's like the "Gears of War" example we talked about yesterday, which was Microsoft's strategy for generating word-of-mouth about that game. It fit that community of consumers very well.
While you're thinking about corporate apologies and the notion of "kairos" or timing/tone, be sure to send me relevant links and I'll post them here.

Alternative assignment
Here's the alternative assignment for David Mamet's "Glengarry, Glen Ross." You'll need to rent GGR or read the play, and then write an essay on American individualism and its relationship to success at any cost. What were the "tipping points"? Could a different path have been taken through different choices? When? Describe the context in which decisions were made. Discuss the rationalizations and justifications that were used by the co-workers and bosses. This is a two- or three-page paper, double spaced; spend your time on commentary as directed by the prompts above, rather than summarizing the play.

Remember to visit PRSA web site
Check out PRSA's code of ethics at its web site, http://www.prsa.org/. Remember to compare parts of the code to the principles we have discussed in class: freedom, stewardship, justice, humaneness, truth. Which parts of the code mirror communitarian impulses? Utilitarian impulses? In general, do you think the actions inscribed in the code are mostly communitarian or utilitarian?

Two views of corporate speech
Be sure to read over the First Amendment link, provided in the early part of the semester, for our discussion of corporate and commercial speech.
This link provides one perspective on corporate speech (mid-way through this article), in terms of how corporate speech "rights" may impinge on individual speech rights. What do you think? Are there recent examples of this dilemma that you could discuss in class?

Here's another link from 2002 to information about the Nike case (mentioned in our text), from a different perspective.

Logistics for class
We'll meet at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, since I have the first meeting of a UNT task force on which I'm serving. This will be the only time that we'll have a late start for class. Remember also that we have a due date on Oct. 8.
Also, we'll not be meeting Oct. 15 since we'll be attending the play on Oct. 14. I'll have maps for you in class on Oct. 8, alternative assignments for those not attending, and other information. The play starts at 2 p.m.; I'll be there at 1:15, waiting in the will-call line for our tickets. Here's a link to the Dallas Theatre Center.
