More on CSR, or having your cake and eating it, too
We talked Tuesday about Corporate Social Responsibility, and here's a link about an oil company and recent news about a 10-year-old lawsuit about Texaco's environmental damage in the Amazon region. The advertising campaign from Chevron, now owner of the former Texaco, doesn't match the reality of its operational circumstances in fighting lawsuits demanding damages for the environmental pollution. If Chevron cares about communities and alternative energy, then why doesn't it care about the Amazon region and its communities?
It's a case of branding schizophrenia, and consumers are smarter than that. It's sort of like the disconnect between two brands owned by Unilever: Dove and Axe.
Web sites related to CSR, ethics, and the practice of public relations
Here are the web sites we discussed during class:
http://www.prsa.org/ (see the code of ethics here)
http://www.prwatch.org/ (covers current events and corporate cases, often when the PR folks aren't performing well or are involved in spin)
